A Swedish architect while working in the slums asked people what they needed most to make their life easier and surprisingly the answer was not a house, but a toilet! Based on this, he has invented a single-use, self-sanitizing, fully bio-degradable bag which after 2-4 weeks becomes a pathogen-free fertilizer. The brilliance in this innovation, “the Peepoo” is multiple. See www.peepoople.com. This product has the potential to revolutionize sanitation and civilization as we know it and most interestingly is currently under trial in Kibera.

Check out this site www.lightingafrica.org to see the innovations in solar and other forms of affordable lighting that are transforming how lighting can be delivered to rural homes that are currently relying on kerosene. These products are great for city dwellers too! There are many applications ranging from just "cool stuff" to have around the home, through to portable kits that can be taken on safaris for charging lights as well as mobile phones. There are loads of companies and products entering the market place, so keep on watching this space!

If you have a hard time keeping your mutt out of trash cans, try this easy tip that will break the habit and NOT HARM your dog. Place an open packet of Chinese hot mustard in the bottom of the empty wastebasket or on top of the waste basket before heading out the door. As soon as the dog sticks her head inside the waste can, it will recoil from the sharp odour. Be consistent. Try to remember to do this every day for about two weeks until your dog figures out the pungent smell is not worth the effort. Happy training! Woof!Amy L. Aflotoxin poisoning of pets is a problem in Kenya. Learn how to recognize and avoid it.Go ahead; I dare you to google aflatoxin. You will come up with pages and pages of very scientific documents and long multi syllable scientific words. If you have the time and energy to wade through much of it you may still find yourself confused. Please contact your vet for answers to any question you may have regarding safe feeding practices or unanswered questions. I am not a vet and do not intend to give nutritional or medical advice. But I want to let you know Aflatoxin is out there and why it’s important to avoid it for your pets health. Aflatoxin can affect dogs, cats and people can be poisoned by it too, though the human liver can excrete the toxin to some extent. What is Aflatoxin? Well, to paraphrase a very long, scientific article by Reddy, S.V. and Farid Waliyar; Aflatoxins are potent toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, immunosuppressive agents produced as secondary metabolites by the fungus Aspergillus flavus and A parasiticus….. etc, etc, etc. Now for the layman’s definition, Aflatoxin is the waste product of fungus that gets on cereal items like maize or even omena (the little dried fish some people feed their pets).Aflatoxin poisoning damages the liver due to a buildup of the toxins there, frequently resulting in death. If you suspect Aflatoxin poisoning waste no time in getting your pet to a vet! Symptoms of Aflatoxin poisoning can include rough coat, weight loss, abnormally colored gums and sometimes diarrhea. Aflatoxin also compromises the animal’s immune system so other symptoms of an ill pet could be present as well. Aflatoxin or the fungus that produces it is not visible to the naked eye. If you see a food bag saying “Aflatoxin Free!!” it’s not possible. If the packaging states “Aflatoxin Tested!” that’s great, but if they make 10 batches a day for 365 days a year and only tested one batch, what good is that assurance? Plus, what were the test results? If you insist on feeding ugali to your pets, try to use only human grade maize meal unless you know exactly where the maize came from and how it was handled. There has been some recent success with a clay microfix (clay particle) which binds the aflatoxin spores, making it impossible for the pet to digest so it passes through your pet and is excreted in their feces. This additive is available in Kenya at some pet stores, under several brand names. Please check with your Vet as to the value of adding this to your pets feed source. Here’s to a happy, healthy pet!! The Seawater Greenhouse is an exciting technology for creating fresh water from seawater, using an adapted greenhouse. Given that Kenya is a water stressed country but has a 500km coastline and excellent experience in floriculture and horticulture, the potential for this new technology is high and should be investigated further. The technology involves gravitating or pumping sea water and using it to humidify and cool the air inside a greenhouse, followed by using solar panels to evaporate and distill fresh water. Later, the humidified air is expelled from the greenhouse and used to promote the growth of plants outside and the slightly more concentrated residual seawater is returned to the ocean. /lifestyle/eco-buzz-the-seawater-greenhouseRead your cat's body language 17 Nov 2009
If you understand your cat’s body language, it can help improve your relationship with her! What mood is your cat in? If her ears are up high and her tail straight, she's happy. If her ears are swiveled off to the side and her tail is high but slightly bent at the tip, she is very happy. But, if her tail is drooping, it is a sign of unhappiness or illness. If her tail is bushy, that usually means that you cat is ready for battle or might be afraid. When your cat’s tail is thrashing wildly, it means she is about to lose her temper (time to tell the kids to leave her alone), while a slowly wagging tail means alertness.Enjoy your feline freinds.
