For the second week, KK Security reported that vehicle hijackings were the most noticeable crime in Nairobi.Unlike last week, where carjacks were concentrated in the Thika and Limuru Road areas, this week recorded a dispersion to include Kilimani, the Industrial Area and Kamiti. The indications that a single gang might be responsible for carjacks in Ruaka, Wangige, Lower Kabete and Kamiti areas persisted for the second week running.13 January, 2011. Carjackers attacked a motorist in Industrial Area as he drove to work. He was robbed of money and other property. 15 January, 2011. - Several carjacks were reported along the Wangige-Lower Kabete-Limuru roads with several motorists attacked and robbed. It's been one of those weeks. For every couple of steps forward there is a step or several backwards. But this week, the good news only!

Reports about the killing of 7 rhinos and several elephant over the last week has thrown Kenya’s conservation fraternity into a crisis mode, with some already claiming that South Africa’s rhino killing spree – more than 600 rhinos have been poached this year in South Africa – is now coming to Kenya too.

Duffy is 17 weeks this week. He is about the same weight as two of his littermates that I keep up with. He suddenly seems spindly-legged and top-heavy this week.

Performance of the Nairobi Stock Exchange has been mixed so far this year. In spite of most companies in all four sectors reporting improved interim or final results for 2010, most counter prices have declined over the period.

Last week, Nairobi’s streets were littered with traffic and queues at petrol stations as an artificial shortage of fuel took hold.  This week is better but the crisis is not over. 

Well, it’s been a big week for everybody, especially the pup who weighed in at 13 kilos! He was weighed at 12 weeks, 2 days, so definitely a kilo a per week.

The Aviation and Allied Workers Union has announced another  imminent strike action against Kenya’s national airline from the middle of this week, prompting concerns by the country’s tourism industry over the likely impact on the sector and the national economy.

  The Kenya shilling has fared poorly against major currencies this week. It has more to do with factors affecting these currencies rather than the shilling. The Euro has been marred by the debt crisis in Greece and Portugal, which is only marginally better off. The Euro fell to a four-year low against the US Dollar causing risk-averse traders and investors to exchange their Euros for dollars. The increased demand for the dollar has weakened the Kenya shilling, which this week has fallen to a 12-month low. Kenyan exporters earning US$ dollars are benefiting but the horticultural sector is on the path to despair, with the majority of its exports being to Europe.  Importers of course are also no doubt feeling the impact.  Kenya is still on the path to a more stable and growing economy but there are now heightened inflationary pressures. The month on month inflation rate for March 2010 stood at a low of 3.7%. An unstable exchange rate also has its implications.  As the Europeans try to agree on the bail-out for Greece, there are more European countries with weak economies on the periphery. And as seen with the previously US-led financial crisis, the impact is wide. Several markets around the world are now under pressure and volatile. In the meantime, Kenya can do little but watch and weather the storm.  Althea McCourt ABIS Limited      

This week has been an important one in terms of parliament’s passing of legislation. In an attempt to beat the August 27 deadline for the passage of bills enacting parts of the new constitution, MPs have been working overtime. Parliament sitting times were extended and increased from four to six per week.

This week, Duffy has been getting out to socialize a bit more. He received his last Parvo vaccination at 18 weeks and he needed another 2 weeks for it to be fully effective, so I have been taking him out only to places where there are not likely to have been unvaccinated dogs.

In spite of Kenya’s current woes from rising food and fuel prices, a report released this week showed a significant decline in the number of Kenyans falling into the poorest segment of the population.

All is well here in Malindi and thankfully Kenya Sport Fishing have just had our busiest week of the season with our whole fleet fishing for four days in a row.

Sunshine, calm blue water and lots of billfish is what a fishermen dreams of.

This week Duffy has been busy growing. I had to weigh him for his next dose of de-wormer and topical tick/flea treatment. He weighed 21 kilos at 16 weeks.

As of last Wednesday, Duffy was 7 months and approximately 32 kilos! He is no longer being weighed every 2 weeks as he is no longer being dewormed every two weeks.

The two skinny, abandoned dogs that I wrote about last week have been taken on by a single family.
