Whilst the Kenyan government has taken measures to shield consumers from high fuel prices, it has no control over the international market. And the ongoing North African and Middle East crises continue to push the prices up.

As businesses battle ever-present operating challenges, the recent announcement by Kenya Power on planned power rationing has certainly only added to their woes.

Kenya’s policy decision to have half of the electricity produced by 2018 come from geothermal sources has been boosted when ground was broken yesterday to begin construction of another 280 MW geothermal power plant to be known as Olkaria III, neighbouring the existing plants of Olkaria I and Olkaria II.

Geothermal energy sources are already in use in Kenya through the existing geothermal power station in the Rift Valley near Mt. Longonot, but the lastest results of test drilling near the Menengai Crater not far from the town of Nakuru are yet more promising.

The French Development Bank has just signed a major loan agreement worth nearly 60 million Euros with the Kenyan Geothermal Development Company to finance the purchase of drilling rigs and other equipment used to tap into the extensive geothermal potential in Kenya’s Rift Valley.

The Kenya shilling continues to weaken, which is reportedly giving the Central Bank Governor ‘sleepless nights’. The shilling hit a new low of Kshs 94.5167 to the US$1.00. The weakening is associated with the continued rising demand for the currency by importers, and which has not been balanced with increased supplies of foreign currency which should be generated from higher exports due to the weak currency.

Labour Day saw the announcement of a 12.5% increase in the minimum wages in Kenya. Whilst this was a 25% rise over last year’s increment, it was just 20% of what the employee’s union had demanded (60%). As the cost of living continues to rise particularly within the lower income groups, for some, this was seen as their only hope of managing.

Uganda’s Ministry of Energy has signed a power purchase agreement with American company AAE Systems, pre-requisite to entering the construction phase.

A power project tapping into the wind, a renewable resource in this part of Kenya, is expected to break ground later this year. The green power project will be the second significant one of its kind in Kenya, with the first one erected on the Ngong Hills outside Nairobi.

Last week, Nairobi’s streets were littered with traffic and queues at petrol stations as an artificial shortage of fuel took hold.  This week is better but the crisis is not over. 

Kenya’s Budget for fiscal year 2011 – 2012 was read on the scheduled date after all. The budget focuses on alleviating some of the burden of the rising cost of living, as well as continuing to focus on infrastructure building.

As the elections in Kenya are drawing nearer are Ugandans, South Sudan, Eastern Congo, Rwanda and Burundi stocking up on essential commodities, threatening an artificial shortage through panic buying.
